See what happens when inspired clients and passionate makers come together to create something truly special.
It’s always a pleasure to look back at the projects completed over the prior year and reflect on the creativity and collaboration that each one represents. This year’s collection of our favourite custom furniture pieces highlights the diverse talents of our community of makers and the unique visions of the clients we work with. While each project is distinct, they all share a common thread: a commitment to thoughtful design and craftsmanship.
You’ll find a range of styles and project scopes in this year’s selection, from a dining table fit for a Parliament (literally!) to a maker who specialises in bringing salvaged timber back to life. There’s even a collaboration that brings together the worlds of whisky and sneakers (yes, really!).
These projects are a reminder that custom furniture is about more than just filling a space; it’s about creating something meaningful and lasting that reflects the individual needs and personalities of those who will use it. We hope you enjoy this glimpse into the world of custom-made, and perhaps find a spark of inspiration for your own home.
Victorian Parliament: Speaker’s Room Table & Chairs
by Elliot Gorham from Steel Road in Yackandandah, VIC
Photography by Michael Gordon Hill
Stepping into the historic Parliament of Victoria is to step back in time, but a new chapter began with the recent refurbishment of a key space within this landmark building. We were first approached by the designer and architect back in 2023. The challenge? To create a dining suite for the Speaker’s Dining Room that would honour the past while embracing the future. The brief envisioned pieces that were both undeniably modern and deeply respectful of the building’s heritage.
Following a rigorous tender process, the talented team at Steel Road in Yackandandah was entrusted with this prestigious commission. They, in turn, brought their collaborative spirit to the project, weaving together the skills of local artisans like upholsterer Ben Saunier, and sourcing magnificent Blackwood timber from the Otways through Corsair Sustainable Timbers.
The outcome is impressive: a dining suite that whispers of history while singing the praises of contemporary Australian design, locally sourced materials and high-quality craftsmanship. It’s a legacy built to last.
Ebonised Oak Dining Table
by Andrew and Jason at Paradox Movement in Sydney, NSW
We are continually inspired by the project briefs we receive from designers and architects, and this magnificent dining table, crafted by Andrew and Jason at Paradox Movement, is a testament to the power of such collaborations. The table’s imposing 3-meter length, made from ebonised Oak, is further enhanced by the striking, sculptural form of its elliptical base. This is a piece that exemplifies the seamless fusion of visionary design and masterful craftsmanship.
Banquette Seating, Table and Shelving
by Rory Bardon in Melbourne, VIC
Every now and then, a project comes along that’s more than just furniture—it’s about transforming a space into a feeling. This was one of those projects. Inspired by their 1970s mid-century modern home, our clients sought bespoke pieces that would not only be beautiful but also enhance their daily lives. Rory delivered on all fronts, and the results are truly heartwarming. We think you’ll be just as touched as we were when you read the client’s heartfelt feedback:
Absolutely thrilled with the custom furniture crafted by Rory! We recently commissioned Rory to design and build a banquette seating arrangement, a dining table, and shelves for our 1970’s mid century modern home, and we couldn’t be happier with the results.
Firstly, Rory’s attention to detail is impeccable. Every aspect of the banquette seating, from the choice of materials, fabrics to the stitching, is flawless. It fits perfectly in our space and has become the focal point of our dining area. The comfort level is beyond, we find ourselves at the table long after meals are finished, simply enjoying the coziness of the space.
The dining table is a beautifully put together, the craftsmanship is evident in every curve and joint. The choice of wood is exquisite, and the finish is smooth to the touch. It’s sturdy enough to withstand the daily wear and tear of family life, and a four year old!
Working with Rory was an absolute pleasure from start to finish. He listened to our ideas and preferences, offering valuable suggestions along the way. His passion for his craft is evident in the quality of his work, and he’s a great guy.
Overall, we couldn’t be happier with our experience with Rory and the stunning custom furniture he created for us.
Display Boxes for Glenfiddich Whisky
by Matthew William Parrish at MWP Furniture Design in Northern Beaches, Sydney, NSW
A collaboration to savor! This project is centred on the creative forces of renowned Australian sneaker atelier, Chase Shiel, and the iconic, world’s most awarded single malt Scotch whisky, Glenfiddich. A collaboration that speaks of luxury, craftsmanship, and a shared passion for pushing boundaries.
It revolves around Glenfiddich’s Grand Yozakura, a rare and limited edition whisky aged for a remarkable 29 years. For their third collaboration, Chase Shiel designed an extremely limited edition sneaker, incorporating luxurious Japanese leather uppers and intricate, detailed embroidery inspired by the whisky’s Japanese influences. You can view these exquisite sneakers here: https://chaseshiel.com/pages/yozakura
To complete this trifecta of artistry, a bespoke box was needed, one that would befit such a high-end product and reflect the exceptional quality of both the whisky and the sneakers. For this crucial task, Matthew Parish, a local craftsman celebrated for his meticulous attention to detail and unwavering commitment to excellence in his work, was the clear choice. His involvement guarantees that every element of this collaboration, from the spirit within to the handcrafted container that holds it, is a testament to bespoke craftsmanship.
Matt went above and beyond for us designing and constructing beautiful boxes for a collaboration with Glenfiddich and Melbourne sneaker designer Chase Shiel. The craftsmanship was outstanding and faultless down to the smallest of details. Matt also was very accommodating of our tight deadline and communicated with us every step of the way. He is an extremely talented maker and I hope we can work together again in the future.

by Vinnie Rovedi at Focused Dog Creations in Tamborine Mountain, QLD
This stunning wine cabinet is a testament to the timeless beauty of walnut and white oak. This is a match that’s hard not to fall in love with. At the outset of the project Vinnie shared an image of his CAD designs and the timber boards he had selected, at that point we knew Vinnie was creating something truly special. The finished piece speaks for itself.
It’s been a pleasure working with Vinnie … Great attention to details. His work is impeccable and we are overjoyed with the result. Everything he promised he had delivered. We would recommend Vinnie to anyone who is after quality craftsmanship and a unique piece of furniture for their home.

Salvaged Timber Buffet
by Trevor Neal in Barrington, NSW
This project beautifully captures the sentimental heart that often beats within our client commissions. It begins in 1960s Tamworth, where a builder salvaged timber formwork from a new motel. Decades later, this same timber, once simple shelving in his tin shed—a cherished childhood haunt for his grandchildren—found its way into the hands of one of those very grandchildren, along with a vintage 1950s “Kalif Motor Spirit” crate, a piece brimming with familial nostalgia.
Her brief: transform these timeworn materials into a buffet and vanity, weaving the past into her present. This task was perfect for Trevor, who is passionate about breathing new life into recycled timber. His commitment to sustainability and knack for turning discarded materials into treasures made him the ideal collaborator, crafting pieces that resonate with deep personal meaning.
This project exemplifies the magic of commissioning custom furniture from local artisans. It’s about creating something truly unique, tailored to you and your story, a celebration of heritage and personal narrative.
Trevor has come up with the most amazing set of cupboards to a plan that evolved as the project started, which truly honoured not just the memory of the two Grandpas (one who provided the timber, the other who provided the funds) but added a very unique touch to my house.
Trevor also displayed much patience, and professionalism as the project continued, the plans evolved and some of the timber proved unworkable. He is to be absolutely commended on both facets of his workmanship.
Studio Desk
by Jem and the team at Like Butter in Castlemaine, VIC
We love makers who dare to be different, and Jem and the team at Like Butter are the perfect example. Their approach to furniture design is anything but ordinary, which is why we wanted to feature this project among our favourites. The client needed a home office and studio desk that could handle both extensive writing and music production. They came with a detailed brief: a U-shaped design and precise dimensions. This was a project that Like Butter was uniquely equipped to handle.
Jem, the creative force behind Like Butter, has developed a modular shelving system called KittaParts that’s a game-changer. Think of it as a designer’s playground, a system that allows for endless customisation and configurations. (If you’re not already following him on Instagram (@likebutter.au), you’re missing out on some serious design inspiration, not to mention his highly entertaining videos!). Jem’s feed is a testament to his boundless creativity and infectious enthusiasm.
But what truly sets Like Butter apart is their unwavering commitment to client satisfaction. This glowing testimonial from the client says it all:
Jem and the team’s work have been outright stellar. The care and sweating of every last detail, the obsessive research to get the best product ever, the ideas and input I hadn’t even thought of have been invaluable. And they have gone way above and beyond with the final delivery and control of the product’s quality. I didn’t think that level of care was even possible in today’s market. Thank you guys!
Children’s Motor Skills & Sensory Board
by Danielle McDowell at DMD Assemblies in Northcote, Melbourne, VIC
This final project will seem an unusual inclusion in the list of our favourite commissions, but I wanted to include it as it’s a small and fun project that encapsulates the joy that often comes from commissioning a personalised piece from a local maker. Our client was on the hunt for a motor skills and sensory board for their one-year-old goddaughter, but they were tired of the mass-produced, poorly made, plastic-laden options that are readily available. Instead, they envisioned something sturdy, handmade, and brimming with that special touch of TLC.
The brief was clear: “Both of her parents are creatives, her father being a carpenter who works with beautiful Tasmanian timbers,” the client explained that they wanted something special that will be treasured and passed down to their next child.
As you can see from the image, the finished sensory board is a testament to that vision. It’s a piece that radiates warmth, craftsmanship and a playful energy.
Absolutely fantastic! Was very pleased with the whole process and the maker was incredible to work with. Left with a one of a kind piece which I’m sure is going to spark joy!
