We’ve curated a list of our favourite custom made furniture projects from 2017. Maybe your commission will make the cut for next year’s list?
It’s a holiday tradition for us to reflect on the year gone by with a selection of our team’s favourite bespoke projects.
Each tells a story – and that’s ultimately what we’re most proud of at Handkrafted. Our ability to foster connections and watch stories unfold through the creation of beautiful handmade products.
Our goal is to inspire your stories – to help transform wild ideas into masterpieces rich in sentiment, creations you’ll cherish for life and bequeath to your children, and your children’s children.
In no specific order, here are our top ten favourite projects commissioned via Handkrafted in 2017…
1. Shuffleboard for WeWork Sydney
by Jonathan West
A contemporary take on the traditional shuffleboard, Jonathan delivered a beautiful Oak and Ash rendition featuring impeccable joinery. Commissioned by WeWork for their offices at 333 George St.
For those of us in Australia not familiar with a Table Shuffleboard, it’s is a popular American game, often found in backyards or bars, played with pucks on a wooden board. It is conceptually similar to curling or even lawn bowls. The sandy substance seen in the images are actually salt-like beads of silicone that act like ball bearings to allow the pucks to effortlessly slide across the table as if it’s floating.
2. Ebonised American Oak Credenza
by Tim Noone
Exquisite detail in this 3m long credenza, each crafted with perfection. Tim documented much of the process via his Instagram, well worth scrolling through to see how this piece came to life.
3. Walnut Bathroom Vanity
by Nick at Pedulla Studio
Designed by client Fiona @fedesign_interiors, the walnut vanity features a Pietra grey marble and bronze tapware. Nick created a fascinating short film of the process of machining the angled timber exterior.
4. Floating Wall Unit
by Trevor Neal
Beautifully summarised in the feedback from a happy client:
“This is a man who loves his timber. His work demonstrated wonderful attention to detail and exceptionally fine craftsmanship. We now have a uniquely beautiful floating wall unit in our study.”
5. Dining Table
by Ben Percy
It’s hard not to fall in love with the mesmerising grain of American Walnut – this beautiful timber is regularly a crowd favourite. In the client’s own words;
“It has been lovely working with someone so passionate about their work which is clearly reflected in the final product.”
6. Blackbutt Console
by Luke at Christopher Blank
Blackbutt timber incorporating sliding slatted doors and internal drawer storage. Complete with rockstar delivery via the third floor balcony!
7. Spotted Gum Dining Table
by Victoria Keesing
Spotted Gum narrow dining table with patinated Zinc panels and Wenge highlights.
8. Walnut, Brass & Leather Drawer Unit
by Pete at Curious Tales
Walnut island dresser with custom made brass finger pulls and leather details.
9. Glass Display Cabinets
by Ross at Lee Sinclair Design Co
Tasmanian Blackwood & black leatherette base retail display cases for sunglasses, jewellery and leathergoods at Apartment Store.
“Ross went above all expectations … couldn’t be happier with the final product.”
10. Herringbone Table
by Anthony Kleine
8-Seater Herringbone dining table in Victorian Ash
And while we don’t yet have the finished images available – we thought we might sneak in an in-progress shot of this custom AV Media Unit designed by client Brad Ratajczek, incorporating a twisted drawer front and plenty of ambitious angles.
Entertainment Unit
by Rolf Barfoed
Last but not least, it would be remiss of us to exclude the beautiful lighting created by many of our makers, in addition to furniture. Here are two of our favourite custom lighting projects this year…
I. Brass Lighting for WeWork Sydney Custom Office Fitout
by Zev Bianchi
Custom made to WeWork’s exact specifications are the brass lighting fixtures that adorn the ceilings of WeWork at 333 George St.
II. Blackwood & Ceramic Pendant
by Asher Abergel
Asher designed and created this limited-edition Blackwood version of his Turns pendant exclusively for a Handkrafted promotion we ran during DENFAIR.
With so many incredible projects to choose from, it’s always difficult to narrow down our favourites to such a small few. Those selected aren’t necessarily the largest or most technically complex, yet each have a story that resonates with us for one reason or another.
Keep an eye on our Instagram for further insight into the breadth of projects our independent makers produce for Handkrafted clients … from the playful to the professional, or perhaps even a little eccentric, we’ve got you covered.
